Skin care is something I believe is very important and something I think many people skip out on during their daily routines. Over the last couple years I have realized that I want to take good care of my face and skin while I am young so I can hopefully have healthier skin when I am old. Luckily, I have been blessed with skin that is not very acne prone, however, I definitely have my bad times and, unfortunately, right now is one of those times. That is what motivated me to write this post! I have had many friends ask me what I do to keep my skin acne free and keep breakouts at bay, so I figured I would share it all with you!
*I am not a dermatologist or a doctor so I can’t verify that these things are clinically proven, however, they are all things I do regularly and seem to work great for me! No one’s skin is the same so do what you think would work best and be healthiest for you. I have normal to oily skin and these are all my favorite products, but they may not work for everyone.*
First and foremost, the absolute best thing you can do for your body and skin is DRINK WATER!! Water helps flush out the toxins from your body and keep you hydrated so your organs can function properly. Your skin is the biggest organ of your body, so it is extremely important to give it the nutrients and care it needs to stay healthy and happy!
Wash your face Every. Single. Night.
If you struggle with acne prone skin washing your face every night will help you more than any other tip I am about to give you! This is so so so important, and you cannot skip out and miss even one night. Think about all the make up, dirt, and oil that sits on your face all day long clogging your pores and creating the perfect scenario for a breakout. If you sleep with all of that on your face at night your pores will stay clogged all night and zits will start appearing quickly. It’s important to get into bed with a clean and soft face so that your skin can heal and repair itself while you sleep.
Trust me, I know it can be hard to get yourself out of bed to wash your face when you are tired and cozy watching your favorite show, but just do it! You will be glad you did later.
*TIP: If your face seems to be breaking out no matter what you do try switching up your face wash. I have found that if I use the same one for too long I start breaking out again.
Use a cleansing device
Exfoliating is an important step in a face routine because you need to get the dead skin off your face and help clean out your pores. Sometimes a simple face wash just doesn’t do the trick! I use my Vanity Planet Ultimate Skin Spa – Facial Cleansing System about once a week and sometimes more if my skin is having a lot of trouble, but some people use theirs daily. I got mine about seven months ago and it has seriously helped my skin so much. I would recommend it to everyone!
Use a toner
Some people use a toner in place of washing their face, but I like to use mine in addition to washing my face. Toners are meant to clean out pores and remove grime from your face. If you are acne prone I highly recommend trying one! Sometimes when I apply the toner after washing my face there is still makeup residue on the cotton round! That means sometimes just washing your face alone doesn’t get all the dirt off. Using the toner really helps to get your skin as clean and clear as it can get.
I am currently using L’OREAL Hydrafresh Toner but I plan on trying others eventually so I can find my favorite!
Moisturize, Moisturize, MOISTURIZE!
This step is essential in every face routine. Many people don’t realize that your skin needs oil to stay healthy and when you are not keeping it moisturized it can actually cause more acne. Often times when my friends are struggling with their face the one thing I ask them is if they are keeping it moisturized. Many times they tell me they don’t moisturize at all because it seems like that would cause more acne, but it’s actually the opposite way around. A moisturizer I found for people with oily skin is Cetaphil DermaControl Moisturizer. I make sure to use my moisturizer every time I wash my face and it makes such a huge difference for me. The moisturizer I have been using for about six years now is Olay Complete Cream All Day Moisturizer with Sunscreen and it is the best I have found! I use it morning and night since I love it so much. It leaves my face soft and smooth but not greasy.
*TIP: Always buy a moisturizer with SPF because it will help keep your face protected even on days when you feel like you won’t be getting much sun exposure. Sunscreen is the #1 most important thing you can do to protect your skin and keep it looking young, so use it!
Going the extra mile:
These are some of the things I do when my skin is really struggling or I just want to take extra good care of it!
Steam your face
If you really want to open up your pores and get a good cleaning then I recommend steaming it every once in a while.
– Remove your makeup and wash your face really well
– Boil water on your stove and pour it into a bowl
– Get a towel wet
– Place your head over the bowl (be SUPER careful to not get too close to the water)
– Lay the towel over your head and the steam will be trapped
– Stay like this for a few minutes to allow your pores to open up
After, I always use a good face mask to clean out my pores which leads me to my next tip…
Use a face mask
Face masks are great to use every once in a while to get your face extra clean and fresh. There are so many good ones on the market but my absolute favorite is the Origins Active Charcoal Mask to Clean Pores. I have been using this for a few years now, and I am in love! It seriously leaves your face feeling like a baby’s bottom.
Vitamin E oil
About once a month I like to give my face a deep moisturize to help rejuvenate it. After my face is washed and clean I cut off the top of one capsule and spread the oil all over my face in place of a moisturizer and sleep with it on. I will warn you, it is very thick and sticky, so I suggest sleeping with your hair in a bun. Vitamin E oil, when applied topically, can help slow down the aging process, so of course I had to try it! I like to do this in hopes of keeping my face looking young forever. I notice my face always feels so soft and healthy the next morning.
– When buying Vitamin E oil look for natural capsules and not synthetically made
– Wash your face in the morning to get the remaining oil off
– If you have an acne scar try applying it to the area at night. It can help with scarring!
***Some people’s skin may not react well to Vitamin E oil, so I recommend trying some in a little spot before putting it all over your face. I have never had an issue, and I love using it, but I have read that some people’s skin doesn’t handle it well.***
I love using Vaseline as a moisturizer a couple times a week because it helps keep my skin extra soft.
*Bonus: I am about to share with you the most amazing tip I have ever learned…… If you want longer and healthier eyelashes put a little Vaseline on your eyelashes and the roots every night. I swear by this. I have shared this tip with a few of my friends and they all do it now because they noticed such a difference. It takes a couple of days, but within a week I always see a noticeable difference.
And that is my skin care routine to get clear skin fast! I hope these tips help some of you like they have helped me. If you try anything and it helps please let me know! I would love to hear about it.
